Japanese MEXT Scholarship for Undergraduates

The MEXT Scholarship is sponsored by the Japanese government with the sole purpose of helping students from other countries study in Japan. MEXT in this Japanese scholarship implies Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Both undergraduates, Master’s or PhD students as well as technical or training college students can apply for this scholarship

An official statement from the Japanese government confirms that students from other countries can now apply for the 2026 MEXT Scholarships. This scholarship is known for helping foreign study at universities in Japan. In other to get this scholarship you must get recommendations from the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country.

In addition, the 2026 MEXT Scholarship for Undergraduates is a fully funded program for international students from countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan. It helps them study for a Bachelor’s degree at a Japanese national university and covers everything, including school fees, monthly allowance, and travel to and from Japan.

Application for the Japanese MEXT scholarship is in two ways

Firstly, through direct application to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) with a reference from a Japanese embassy or diplomat from the country you are applying from.

Secondly, through applying with recommendation from a Japanese University

Requirements

Your country must be in diplomatic ties with Japan

You must be born on or after April 2, 2001.

You must have finished, or be on track to finish, 12 years of school education by March or August 2026

You must show that you have a good understanding of Japanese or English to study at a university level.

You also need to be physically and mentally healthy to study abroad.

Benefits of the Japanese MEXT Scholarship

The MEXT Scholarship covers:

Tuition: Full Tuition fees

Allowance: You will receive 117,000 yen per month. If you’re studying or doing research in specific regions, you’ll get an extra 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen each month.

Education Fees: MEXT will cover the entrance exam fees, matriculation fees, and tuition at the university.

Traveling Expenses: MEXT will decide your travel dates and route. They will also provide you with a round-trip airline ticket. One will be for your arrival in Japan and the other one will be your return at the end of the program.
