What To Do While You Wait for NYSC: Finding a Source of Income After Graduation

Life after graduation is a strange place.

One minute you’re celebrating the end of exams, taking final-year pictures, and popping wine. The next minute, you’re just… home. Waiting. Confused. Sometimes even broke.

In schools like UNN, you may wait up to 6 months before NYSC, and that period can feel like limbo. No school stress, no allowance, and no clue what to do next.

Some graduates use that time for leisure Netflix, parties, or what they call “rest.” But the truth is, that 6-month break is a golden opportunity. It’s not the time to fold your arms and wait for NYSC to “rescue” you. It’s time to build something, learn something, or earn something.

Let’s talk about how to find a source of income while you wait.

Learn a Skill You Can Grow Beyond 6 Months

Now, we know 6 months is short especially for technical skills like tailoring, shoemaking, or carpentry. But not all skills need years to master.

There are many digital skills you can begin now and continue developing even during NYSC or alongside your future job:

Graphics design

Copywriting

Content creation

Video editing

Digital marketing

Data analysis

UI/UX design

Coding

The beautiful thing is that you can start learning these from your phone or laptop through free YouTube tutorials or platforms like Coursera, Skillshare, and LinkedIn Learning. And you can start small jobs on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork once you’re confident.

You don’t need to finish learning before you start earning sometimes, learning on the job is part of the journey.

Develop the Passion You’ve Been Ignoring Because of School

Let’s be honest school is a burden to many students’ passions.

Most students in Nigeria are not academically inclined. And it’s not because they’re lazy; it’s because their true interests lie elsewhere music, writing, drawing, tech, business, and so on. But because school wants you in class by 8am and submitting assignments every week, your passion takes the back seat.

So now that you’ve graduated?

Pick it back up.

If you enjoy writing, start blogging or freelancing. Write stories, news, or even ghostwrite CVs and essays.

If you love singing, use this time to start recording, performing or even just putting your content on TikTok and Instagram. Someone is watching.

If you’re a natural storyteller, start a podcast or a YouTube channel. Talk about anything your life, experiences, or things you’re passionate about.

If you like drawing or painting, start showcasing your work online. Create logos, portraits, or comic strips.

If tech fascinates you, go into web development, product design or software engineering. Start slow but be consistent.

If you have always wanted to run a business, this is a good time to start. Small. Maybe thrift clothes, snacks, perfumes, or even digital products.

Don’t chase a new skill if you already have a passion develop the one you’ve buried for too long.
